Wisconsin Healthcare Provider Slashes Energy Costs with LED Retrofit

The ThedaCare Health System located in Wisconsin has been a leader in sustainability initiatives and late last year also recognized that outdoor area lighting at a number of its facilities were in need of an upgrade — both due to excessive maintenance requirements and uneven light quality. The organization has performed a thorough evaluation of LED lighting and upgraded two of its facilities to solid-state lighting (SSL). The healthcare provider projects $40,000 annually in electrical and maintenance savings based on its first outdoor SSL projects.

Sports Teams Use of LEDs Highlighted

NHL franchise the Montreal Canadiens and MLB team the Seattle Mariners are two professional sports teams experimenting with LED lighting as a means of cutting their energy bills and adding flexibility to their lighting, reports The New York Times.

Bell CentreThe Canadiens’ home, the Bell Center, last year installed 140 LED fixtures to light its playing surface. The LEDs produce three times as much light per watt that the high intensity discharge lamp they replaced and will save the venue $125,000 a year in electricity bills, the paper reports. Popular Texas Hotel Lights Up With LED

Austin, Texas is one of the great party towns of the Southwestern United States. Ask anyone west of the Mississippi River where a good place to hear live music is, and they will tell you without hesitation, Austin, Texas. The city is well known for its live music scene that has introduced generations of TV viewers to it, and all of the genres that it encompasses, through the long running series, Austin City Limits. So it’s only logical that if people flock to Austin to see live bands, they will need a place to stay after the show. Cue the Austin Hilton.

Efficient lighting tops the list of green technology investments in a new survey from the Carbon Trust.

Over three-quarters of businesses polled (77%) said they’d invested in energy efficientgreen business directory lighting in the past year, followed by employee awareness training (59%) and energy metering, monitoring and targeting technology (57%).

Lights run in recreational facilities for extended periods of time, resulting in high electricity bills. Even when patrons aren’t in the facility, lights may be left on for a janitorial crew. Upgrading to energy efficient lighting will increase the safety and aesthetics of a store. A brightly illuminated store, inside and out, will appeal more to a customer.
