Office Lighting

Good lighting not only enables people to see, it affects how they feel. Energy efficient lighting can help enrich office life and reduce the energy demands on a building. Lighting is one of the most attractive ways to save energy as older, inefficient lighting technology can account for 40% of the office electricity bill.

Companies can benefit from efficient and effective office lighting. Today’s workplace is a complex and fluid environment, involving a wide range of visual tasks.

Wisconsin Healthcare Provider Slashes Energy Costs with LED Retrofit

The ThedaCare Health System located in Wisconsin has been a leader in sustainability initiatives and late last year also recognized that outdoor area lighting at a number of its facilities were in need of an upgrade — both due to excessive maintenance requirements and uneven light quality. The organization has performed a thorough evaluation of LED lighting and upgraded two of its facilities to solid-state lighting (SSL). LED Payoff $2 Million For Vegas Hotels

When the Las Vegas Sands Corp. began construction on their 5 Diamond resort, the Palazzo was intended to be the cream of the crop, but being the greenest hotel in Las Vegas wasn’t really their top priority. Part Three: Advanced Lighting Control Strategies Like Light Level Tuning, Demand Response Save Energy

There are numerous other advanced controls methods that can help facility managers squeeze even more savings out of their facilities’ lighting systems. They include the following:

• Light level tuning. Adds to energy savings by reducing lighting output at modest levels, undetectable to the human eye.

“Often design light levels are needlessly high, so reducing lamp output by 5 to 10 percent can bring energy savings benefits without compromising occupant satisfaction,” Renner says. Continue reading

Walmart Sees the Light for Parking Lots

As more and more businesses look to increase visibility, safety and energy efficiency in parking lots, we take a look at how Walmart started the trend….

By: Roland RisserProgram Manager, Building Technologies Program

I don’t think about parking lots often. Hot in the summer and jammed with frantic shoppers during holidays, I try to spend as little time in them as possible. But because my passion is energy efficiency, I have recently thought a lot about how much it costs to illuminate these spaces and how much energy could be saved with updated lighting systems.

Business owners have long recognized the potential of light-emitting diode (LED) technology to save energy, reduce maintenance costs and improve environmental sustainability. We wanted to take LEDs to the next level by validating the energy and cost-savings potential for LED lighting in retail parking lots and for wide-scale adoption. Continue reading
