GE Lighting has announced an LED retrofit project at the Boston University (BU) Track and Tennis Center on the Boston, MA campus. GE’s Albeo brand supplied ABHX Series solid-state lighting (SSL) products along with integrated control capability to deliver energy and maintenance savings and a more pleasing environment for athletes and spectators.
The town of Richmond Heights, Ohio, has a little more than 10,000 residents and a whole lot of financial problems. Luckily, Richmond Heights also has the solution to their troubles with LED lights. A solution that will save money they don’t have and increase public safety at the same time.
In 2012, the city’s bill for street and traffic lighting was over $118,000, and they were forced to come up with creative ways to save money. They tasked Police Chief Gene Rowe with the duty of personally turning off every other traffic light in town in an attempt to achieve some of the savings they needed. The chief systematically shut down the lights in a pattern of one on, one off throughout the small town. A total of 54 of the 122 traffic signals were turned off in this move to save money, which is a traffic nuisance and public safety danger to say the least. The total savings of the move amounted to a mere $26,000, leaving lots of fat to cut in the budget still.
LED-based lighting will enable higher illuminance levels on iconic artwork in famed Rome cathedral while preserving the historically-significant work and utilizing 60% less energy.
Osram’s lighting business has announced that it will be retrofitting the lighting in the Rome, Italy Sistine Chapel, using LED-based fixtures to highlight the Michelangelo frescoes. The project, involving custom-designed fixtures optimized for beam control and with a color spectrum that will highlight the pigmentation in the frescoes, will be completed next year, although a pilot project entitled LED4Art has already proven the concept. The traditional lightbulb had a great run, but times have changed. Today’s LED lightbulbs are far different from their storied counterpart. Traditional lightbulbs are actually extremely inefficient. Most of the energy that they use is wasted in the form of heat. For this reason, incandescent lightbulbs have been a major contributor to climate change and environmental damage over the last one hundred or more years. Thankfully, new technology has emerged to address the problems of this inefficiency in the form of LED lighting. LED lighting isn’t just a cost saver and good for the environment, as it is also very functional and pleasant to the eye!

In fact, the average commercial facility could stand to do more than just basic upgrades to its outmoded lighting systems. Options run the gamut — including fixture replacement, daylighting, dimming, advanced control and ballast strategies.

Austin, Texas is one of the great party towns of the Southwestern United States. Ask anyone west of the Mississippi River where a good place to hear live music is, and they will tell you without hesitation, Austin, Texas. The city is well known for its live music scene that has introduced generations of TV viewers to it, and all of the genres that it encompasses, through the long running series, Austin City Limits. So it’s only logical that if people flock to Austin to see live bands, they will need a place to stay after the show. Cue the Austin Hilton.
