Outdoor Lighting: DOE Funds More SSL, MaxLite Post-Top LEDs, Cree and Projects

The US Department of Energy (DOE) will enable LED street light upgrades in five metropolitan areas under the new High-Performance Outdoor Lighting Accelerator program announced by President Obama. In outdoor products, Cree has combined a customized LED and unique optics in an area-lighting fixture while MaxLite has announced new solid-state lighting (SSL) retrofit kits for post-top fixtures. Moving to projects, Cambridge, MA and Honolulu, HI have announced major street-light upgrade plans with the former having already begun deployment. Continue reading

Part Two: Daylight Harvesting, Other Dimming Strategies Help Lower Energy Costs

Daylight is free, and many spaces inside buildings are daylit, yet electric lighting is left on unnecessarily. Daylight harvesting harnesses this free, natural light, using such building control system strategies as light sensing, occupancy sensing, and shade control, while automatically adjusting the energy use of HVAC and electric lighting systems.

The results? Reduced overall energy costs, coupled with healthy and productive working environments. Daylight harvesting technologies include photocells, occupancy sensors and centralized or distributed control systems. The strategy can be implemented during building design and planning or even retrofitted flexibly at a later time. Continue reading

LED Lighting Doing Great Things For Schools

Recently school use of LED lighting has been the subject of conversation for school officials and policymakers who hope to cash in on the cost savings and other benefits of using LED. Even though this topic is popular now, educational institutions have slowly and quietly been moving to LED lighting for several years with a great reception from teachers, students and administrators.

I don’t think about parking lots often. Hot in the summer and jammed with frantic shoppers during holidays, I try to spend as little time in them as possible. But because my passion is energy efficiency, I have recently thought a lot about how much it costs to illuminate these spaces and how much energy could be saved with updated lighting systems.

Business owners have long recognized the potential of light-emitting diode (LED) technology to save energy, reduce maintenance costs and improve environmental sustainability.
