GE Lighting has announced an LED retrofit project at the Boston University (BU) Track and Tennis Center on the Boston, MA campus. GE’s Albeo brand supplied ABHX Series solid-state lighting (SSL) products along with integrated control capability to deliver energy and maintenance savings and a more pleasing environment for athletes and spectators.
The US Department of Energy (DOE) will enable LED street light upgrades in five metropolitan areas under the new High-Performance Outdoor Lighting Accelerator program announced by President Obama. In outdoor products, Cree has combined a customized LED and unique optics in an area-lighting fixture while MaxLite has announced new solid-state lighting (SSL) retrofit kits for post-top fixtures. GE Lighting has announced that the city of Oakland, California is in the process of retrofitting 30,000 street lights with GE Evolve LED Roadway Scalable Cobrahead fixtures. The city is converting high-pressure sodium (HPS) lights that range from 70–400W along the breadth of the city’s roadways with the GE product family that offers models that can deliver a variety of lumen packages, as the scalable name implies.
NHL franchise the Montreal Canadiens and MLB team the Seattle Mariners are two professional sports teams experimenting with LED lighting as a means of cutting their energy bills and adding flexibility to their lighting, reports The New York Times.
The Canadiens’ home, the Bell Center, last year installed 140 LED fixtures to light its playing surface. The LEDs produce three times as much light per watt that the high intensity discharge lamp they replaced and will save the venue $125,000 a year in electricity bills, the paper reports. Daylight is free, and many spaces inside buildings are daylit, yet electric lighting is left on unnecessarily. Daylight harvesting harnesses this free, natural light, using such building control system strategies as light sensing, occupancy sensing, and shade control, while automatically adjusting the energy use of HVAC and electric lighting systems.
The results? Reduced overall energy costs, coupled with healthy and productive working environments. Daylight harvesting technologies include photocells, occupancy sensors and centralized or distributed control systems. Emergency LED lighting from GDS and its ArcSystem can become a functional and integral part of the house lighting system in public venues such as the Wembley Arena in London.
GDS (Global Design Solutions) has announced that the famed Wembley Arena in London now relies on 44 Arc eight-cell LED fixtures for emergency lighting. Intended to become effective September 1, 2014, the final draft of the Lamps V1.0 specification includes refinement of dimming requirements and other minor changes from draft 4 that was recently circulated for comments.
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the final draft of the Energy Star Lamps V1.0 specification that has been under development for more than two years. The changes from draft 4 that had been published this spring are relatively minor, and the new specification is slated to take effect September 1, 2014.
