Power management company Eaton announced that its Neo-Ray Index light-emitting diode (LED) luminaires are helping to improve the lighting performance while lowering energy usage in the Gumberg Library at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. Recently completed on its first floor, this LED lighting upgrade will help the university reduce its annual energy consumption for the floor significantly.

DENVER – Denver International Airport (DIA) is retrofitting more than 5,400 lights located in the airport’s east and west parking garages with energy-efficient LED fixtures.
The majority of the lights are being replaced with 51-watt LEDs. Combined with other lighting systems in the project, DIA expects a net energy savings of about 45 percent, resulting in energy cost savings of about $327,000 per year. Continue reading

Daylight is free, and many spaces inside buildings are daylit, yet electric lighting is left on unnecessarily. Daylight harvesting harnesses this free, natural light, using such building control system strategies as light sensing, occupancy sensing, and shade control, while automatically adjusting the energy use of HVAC and electric lighting systems.
The results? Reduced overall energy costs, coupled with healthy and productive working environments. Daylight harvesting technologies include photocells, occupancy sensors and centralized or distributed control systems. Dubai Municipality, one of the main administrative departments of the Emirate of Dubai government, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Philips to convert all of the municipality’s lighting to LED. The agreement embraces all 262 of the municipality’s buildings, including city government offices, schools, public buildings such as courts and sports venues, and transportation buildings. The transformation from conventional lighting to LED is expected to save the Municipality up to 50 percent, roughly 10.5 GWh per year, on its energy consumption. It will also mean a reduction of some 6,200 tons of CO2 emissions per year.
Johns Hopkins School of Medicine is located in historic downtown Baltimore, Maryland, and is one of the most prestigious learning institutions in the country, but it is also in the midst of a crime wave that disturbs citizens and authorities alike. Since July of this year, there have been several incidents involving attacks and robberies near campus on employees traveling to and from transportation and parking lots. Several of these crimes involved the theft of cell phones that were grabbed from unsuspecting citizens. Police and campus authorities are recommending that pedestrians in the area remain aware of their surroundings at all times and not advertise that they have a cell phone in their possession in an effort to deter the criminals. The single most important tip they have for individuals is to stay in well-lit areas after dark. It is well known that adequate lighting is a major crime deterrent, so avoid dark places and isolated, shadowy areas.
According to estimates from New York’s Research Development Authority (NYSERDA), about 40 percent of electricity in the US is consumed by office buildings. One upstate company, OLEDWorks, is developing technology that could help to lower this consumption.
