Implementing LED Lighting in Your Facility: What to Consider

For many buildings, switching to more efficient lighting is one of the “low hanging fruit” for improving energy efficiency. Facility managers are increasingly turning to LED lighting technology to meet their energy efficiency goals.

casino led lightingLED bulbs top the lighting charts in energy efficiency and longevity, and frequently represent a payback of three years or less. However, LEDs may not be the best choice for every application. When considering whether to implement LEDs in your facility, you’ll need to take many factors into account. Continue reading

Restaurant Lighting

Restaurants are the most energy intensive commercial buildings in the United States according to the Energy Information Administration. Restaurants, per square foot, consume nearly three times the energy of the average commercial building. Closets, storage rooms, break rooms and even walk-in refrigerators are great candidates for occupancy sensors. Exit signs using LEDs are a great alternative to incandescent-based signs.

Lighting accounts for nearly 13% of all the energy used in a restaurant. It is one of the easiest places to save money.

Business Loves LED Lighting; Consumers are Catching Up

Wherever you go these days, you see businesses switching their lighting systems from old-fashioned incandescent or harsh fluorescent to bright and shiny new LEDs. The local supermarket, the office where you work, the train station, restaurant or department store—all of these businesses are seeing the benefits of this rapidly developing technology. The light produced by LED bulbs is brighter and warmer and more focused than ever before, and business owners love the savings to their energy bills. But what about consumers?

Businesses, especially retail, are moving to LED lighting. In Japan, market penetration is over 50 percent and expected to hit 90 percent. Consumers are slower to embrace the technology, balking at the high cost of a bulb. But that is changing.

LEDs Change Thinking About the Light Bulb

Philips sells a range of energy-enhancing lights, including the goLITE BLU, a panel of blue LEDs.

Lights are no longer just for lighting.

With the development of LED lamp technology, the lowly light bulb is doing more than turning on and off. A lamp can be the centerpiece of an environment meant to improve health, moods and even food.

LEDs can create light in multiple colors, generate less heat and use a fraction of the energy of older types of bulbs. And LEDs can be controlled remotely from a PC or smartphone app, as programmable as a television. Continue reading

A Medium-Sized Business Switches to LED Lighting and Reaps the Rewards

The traditional lightbulb had a great run, but times have changed. Today’s LED lightbulbs are far different from their storied counterpart. Traditional lightbulbs are actually extremely inefficient. Most of the energy that they use is wasted in the form of heat. For this reason, incandescent lightbulbs have been a major contributor to climate change and environmental damage over the last one hundred or more years. Thankfully, new technology has emerged to address the problems of this inefficiency in the form of LED lighting. LED lighting isn’t just a cost saver and good for the environment, as it is also very functional and pleasant to the eye!

Shine On, You Crazy Lightbulbs

The other day I found myself at a loss in the light bulb aisle of my hardware store. I might as well have been shopping for a carburetor. There were too many options with too many symbols and verbiage that I couldn’t decipher (LED, CFL, halogen, lumens, Kelvin, CRI), not to mention all of the various brands (GE, Philips, Cree, EcoSmart — each with its own packaging lingo). Since when do you need an electrical engineering degree to buy a light bulb?

City To Fit All Streetlights With Energy-Saving LED Bulbs

The amber glow of the New York City streetlight is going away. In an energy-saving effort, the city plans to replace all of its 250,000 streetlights with brighter, whiter, energy-saving, light-emitting diode fixtures in one of the nation’s largest retrofitting projects, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and the transportation commissioner, Janette Sadik-Khan, said in a news conference on Thursday.

The phasing out is part of the administration’s long-term plan to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent by 2017. Mayor Bloomberg described the switch as a “large and necessary feat” that will save taxpayers money and move the city closer to its sustainability goals. The project is also part of the Transportation Department’s plan for more environment-friendly operations, Ms. Sadik-Khan said. Continue reading

Part Two: Daylight Harvesting, Other Dimming Strategies Help Lower Energy Costs

Daylight is free, and many spaces inside buildings are daylit, yet electric lighting is left on unnecessarily. Daylight harvesting harnesses this free, natural light, using such building control system strategies as light sensing, occupancy sensing, and shade control, while automatically adjusting the energy use of HVAC and electric lighting systems.

The results? Reduced overall energy costs, coupled with healthy and productive working environments. Daylight harvesting technologies include photocells, occupancy sensors and centralized or distributed control systems. The strategy can be implemented during building design and planning or even retrofitted flexibly at a later time. Continue reading

This Energy-Generating Soccer Ball is Lighting Up the World With Play

Jessica Matthews is bringing clean energy to the world, one sport at a time.

Matthews is the founder of Uncharted Play, a startup making sports equipment that generates energy as you play.

“We are organized around one simple mission — to inspire people around the world to lead playful lives and foster their wellbeing,” Matthews told VentureBeat in an interview. “Life brings up all these distractions, and it is the job of businesses to design products that make it easier for people to do good. Recycling is annoying, and a solar panel won’t inspire kids to take something apart and put it back together. What we do is put utility into the most loved sport around the world.” Continue reading

LED Lights Cut Crime in Baltimore Parking Lot

Johns Hopkins School of Medicine is located in historic downtown Baltimore, Maryland, and is one of the most prestigious learning institutions in the country, but it is also in the midst of a crime wave that disturbs citizens and authorities alike. Since July of this year, there have been several incidents involving attacks and robberies near campus on employees traveling to and from transportation and parking lots. Several of these crimes involved the theft of cell phones that were grabbed from unsuspecting citizens. Police and campus authorities are recommending that pedestrians in the area remain aware of their surroundings at all times and not advertise that they have a cell phone in their possession in an effort to deter the criminals. The single most important tip they have for individuals is to stay in well-lit areas after dark. It is well known that adequate lighting is a major crime deterrent, so avoid dark places and isolated, shadowy areas.
