Outdoor Lighting: DOE Funds More SSL, MaxLite Post-Top LEDs, Cree and Projects

The US Department of Energy (DOE) will enable LED street light upgrades in five metropolitan areas under the new High-Performance Outdoor Lighting Accelerator program announced by President Obama. In outdoor products, Cree has combined a customized LED and unique optics in an area-lighting fixture while MaxLite has announced new solid-state lighting (SSL) retrofit kits for post-top fixtures. Moving to projects, Cambridge, MA and Honolulu, HI have announced major street-light upgrade plans with the former having already begun deployment. Continue reading

Shift In Lighting Technologies to Dim Energy Use By End of Decade, says IHS

A fundamental paradigm shift in lighting technologies toward more efficient lamps and bulbs will significantly reduce global electricity demand for general illumination in the next few years, according to IHS.

The energy usage of the installed base of lighting technologies for general illumination will fall to a projected 2.75 trillion kilowatt-hours (kWh) by 2020, down 24% from 3.61 trillion kWh in 2013. Overall, the installed base for general lighting-which covers homes, businesses and street lamps but not architectural or theatrical lighting-will account for 10.3% of the net electricity generated in 2020, down from 16.4% in 2013. Even though this topic is popular now, educational institutions have slowly and quietly been moving to LED lighting for several years with a great reception from teachers, students and administrators.
