Exterior Lighting

By upgrading to energy efficient lighting, you save money. Another important savings factor for exterior lighting (or any difficult to reach area) is the savings achieved through reduction in maintenance costs.

Energy efficient exterior lighting takes two approaches: using the most efficient types of lamps, and using efficient controls to determine when the lighting is used.

Finding High-Wattage LED Replacement Bulbs

In the lighting world, there are few bulb configurations as popular and widely used as halogen PAR38 bulbs. These sturdy and versatile lamps have found their way into just about every location in our modern lives. We use them in businesses and homes, inside and out. We love our PAR38 light bulbs—but we hate to pay for all the electricity they use. Another problem with them is that after July, standard halogen PAR38 bulbs will no longer be available in the United States thanks to the next round of light bulb bans. Although they have been a long time coming, there are now several LED options available, some of which you would actually consider buying.

Shift In Lighting Technologies to Dim Energy Use By End of Decade, says IHS

A fundamental paradigm shift in lighting technologies toward more efficient lamps and bulbs will significantly reduce global electricity demand for general illumination in the next few years, according to IHS.

The energy usage of the installed base of lighting technologies for general illumination will fall to a projected 2.75 trillion kilowatt-hours (kWh) by 2020, down 24% from 3.61 trillion kWh in 2013. Overall, the installed base for general lighting-which covers homes, businesses and street lamps but not architectural or theatrical lighting-will account for 10.3% of the net electricity generated in 2020, down from 16.4% in 2013. New LED Bulb Stays On In Power Outages

We have all experienced it, the dreaded power outage. One minute the family is enjoying their favorite TV show, and the next everyone is sitting in the dark and wondering what to do now that the tech toys are nothing more than paper weights. This is surely a major annoyance, but in some parts of the continent, it is much more than that. In locations with frequent severe weather, power outages are much more common occurrences and can last for much longer periods of time. What lasts half an hour at your house can last for hours, or even days, in remote locations or in instances of major storms. Never mind the bored and whiny kids and defrosting freezer: the lack of light makes every task at hand that much harder and more dangerous to complete; At least until now. A project found on Kickstarter is just the ticket to make power outages that much more bearable, even if they seem to last and last.

Part Three: Advanced Lighting Control Strategies Like Light Level Tuning, Demand Response Save Energy

There are numerous other advanced controls methods that can help facility managers squeeze even more savings out of their facilities’ lighting systems. They include the following:

• Light level tuning. Adds to energy savings by reducing lighting output at modest levels, undetectable to the human eye.

“Often design light levels are needlessly high, so reducing lamp output by 5 to 10 percent can bring energy savings benefits without compromising occupant satisfaction,” Renner says. Continue reading

What’s Best, LED or Incandescent Lights?

Q. I’m replacing the lights in my home before putting it on the market. Is it better to install LED fixtures, if it’s true that incandescent bulbs are being phased out?

A. From a sales perspective, high-efficiency LED lighting is a nice perk, said Ron Lense, an associate real estate broker at Douglas Elliman in Manhattan. But it may not significantly affect your selling price.

“Everybody loves going green,” he said. “They just don’t necessarily want to pay a lot of extra money for it.”

LED lighting is becoming increasingly popular, he said, and if you install it now, “you’ll be ahead of the curve.” Just be cautious about the fixtures you choose, “because this is emerging technology that is quickly changing.” Continue reading

LED Lights Cut Crime in Baltimore Parking Lot

Johns Hopkins School of Medicine is located in historic downtown Baltimore, Maryland, and is one of the most prestigious learning institutions in the country, but it is also in the midst of a crime wave that disturbs citizens and authorities alike. Since July of this year, there have been several incidents involving attacks and robberies near campus on employees traveling to and from transportation and parking lots. Several of these crimes involved the theft of cell phones that were grabbed from unsuspecting citizens. Police and campus authorities are recommending that pedestrians in the area remain aware of their surroundings at all times and not advertise that they have a cell phone in their possession in an effort to deter the criminals. The single most important tip they have for individuals is to stay in well-lit areas after dark. It is well known that adequate lighting is a major crime deterrent, so avoid dark places and isolated, shadowy areas.
