Power management company Eaton announced that its Neo-Ray Index light-emitting diode (LED) luminaires are helping to improve the lighting performance while lowering energy usage in the Gumberg Library at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. Recently completed on its first floor, this LED lighting upgrade will help the university reduce its annual energy consumption for the floor significantly.

Michigan State University has announced the results of a long-day lighting (LDL) research project at Wing Acres Dairy in Barry County, MI. Researchers from the school’s Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Department worked with the Michigan Milk Producers Association (MMPA) to study the implications of LED-based LDL on milk production, and the study indicates an 8% increase over the course of a year.
Ephesus Lighting has announced that the University of Phoenix Stadium located in Glendale, AZ has installed the company’s LED-based stadium lights. The Arizona Cardinals have become the first home NFL (National Football League) team to play on a surface lit by solid-state lighting (SSL), and the NFL Super Bowl will be played under the LED lighting on Feb. 1, 2015.
The Metropolitan Airports Commission operates seven airports in the Minnesota Twin Cities area of Minneapolis-St. Paul, and has begun a massive energy-efficiency project including LED lighting at the flagship Minneapolis St. Paul International Airport (MSP). Construction was begun this past week on what the agency said is Minnesota’s largest solar generation project — a 3-MW (megawatt) plant located atop two parking structures. The ThedaCare Health System located in Wisconsin has been a leader in sustainability initiatives and late last year also recognized that outdoor area lighting at a number of its facilities were in need of an upgrade — both due to excessive maintenance requirements and uneven light quality. The organization has performed a thorough evaluation of LED lighting and upgraded two of its facilities to solid-state lighting (SSL). The healthcare provider projects $40,000 annually in electrical and maintenance savings based on its first outdoor SSL projects.
For many reasons, use of LEDs in both consumer and industrial applications looks bright. So believes Richard Evans, an engineer who has talked to environmental groups about consumer use of LEDs and has been specifying LEDs for a leading manufacturer of industrial automation equipment for over 10 years.
Consumer products to use more LEDs in the future
In the consumer sector, he is very optimistic about the growth of LED use, especially when it comes to LEDs replacing incandescent and fluorescent lighting and the use of LEDs in television sets.
