Streetlamp Retrofits Are Lighting Up the LED Market

LA-street-lamp-energy-manageThe LED retrofit market is at the beginning of a huge upward swing, according to an article in Forbes. IHS Technology reports that of the 140 million streetlights installed worldwide, just over 13 percent are LEDs, and that percentage is expected to jump to almost 65 percent by 2020.

Although LEDs cost three to four times more than traditional streetlamps, they last three to four times longer and produce two to three times more light per watt. They also deliver 30 percent to 70 percent in annual electricity savings over their predecessors, are more programmable and are easier to connect to citywide wireless networks. Continue reading

Oakland Will Upgrade 30,000 Street Lights With GE LED Fixtures

GE Lighting has announced that the city of Oakland, California is in the process of retrofitting 30,000 street lights with GE Evolve LED Roadway Scalable Cobrahead fixtures. The city is converting high-pressure sodium (HPS) lights that range from 70–400W along the breadth of the city’s roadways with the GE product family that offers models that can deliver a variety of lumen packages, as the scalable name implies.

GE Lighting Talks Controls and Networks at Lightfair International 2013

GE Lighting was one of several companies to address lighting controls and networks on the first day of Lightfair International (LFI) which again looked more like an LED event more than a general lighting show. GE announced that it was working with the city of Los Angeles to install new 6LoWPAN (IPv6 over low-power wireless personal area network) network nodes on the city’s growing inventory of LED-based street lights. LED Lighting Academy Launched, Certified LED Professional Designation to be Offered
