Streetlamp Retrofits Are Lighting Up the LED Market

LA-street-lamp-energy-manageThe LED retrofit market is at the beginning of a huge upward swing, according to an article in Forbes. IHS Technology reports that of the 140 million streetlights installed worldwide, just over 13 percent are LEDs, and that percentage is expected to jump to almost 65 percent by 2020.

Although LEDs cost three to four times more than traditional streetlamps, they last three to four times longer and produce two to three times more light per watt. They also deliver 30 percent to 70 percent in annual electricity savings over their predecessors, are more programmable and are easier to connect to citywide wireless networks. Continue reading

Exterior Lighting

By upgrading to energy efficient lighting, you save money. Another important savings factor for exterior lighting (or any difficult to reach area) is the savings achieved through reduction in maintenance costs.

Energy efficient exterior lighting takes two approaches: using the most efficient types of lamps, and using efficient controls to determine when the lighting is used.

Wisconsin Healthcare Provider Slashes Energy Costs with LED Retrofit

The ThedaCare Health System located in Wisconsin has been a leader in sustainability initiatives and late last year also recognized that outdoor area lighting at a number of its facilities were in need of an upgrade — both due to excessive maintenance requirements and uneven light quality. The organization has performed a thorough evaluation of LED lighting and upgraded two of its facilities to solid-state lighting (SSL). The healthcare provider projects $40,000 annually in electrical and maintenance savings based on its first outdoor SSL projects.

City To Fit All Streetlights With Energy-Saving LED Bulbs

The amber glow of the New York City streetlight is going away. In an energy-saving effort, the city plans to replace all of its 250,000 streetlights with brighter, whiter, energy-saving, light-emitting diode fixtures in one of the nation’s largest retrofitting projects, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and the transportation commissioner, Janette Sadik-Khan, said in a news conference on Thursday.

The phasing out is part of the administration’s long-term plan to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent by 2017. Mayor Bloomberg described the switch as a “large and necessary feat” that will save taxpayers money and move the city closer to its sustainability goals. The project is also part of the Transportation Department’s plan for more environment-friendly operations, Ms. Sadik-Khan said. Continue reading

LED Retrofit Saves Mall on Outdoor Lighting

The city of Batesville, Arkansas is a sleepy little town a little less than two hours from the thriving metropolis that is Little Rock. It is a warm and friendly place and a great place to raise kids. In fact, it has been voted one of the 100 Best Small Towns in America. It is also a town that is committed to the community and the environment. The county’s recycling program won the Arkansas community development award and Batesville was selected as the state’s Volunteer Community of the Year. Now the city has made another move towards being a better place to settle: one local shopping centre has replaced old parking lot lights with bright, shiny new LED lamps in a move that will save them over $42,000 a year in energy and maintenance costs, as well as greatly reduce the carbon footprint of both the centre and the town.

When the Eagle Mountain Shopping Centre decided to replace their existing metal halide parking lot lights with LED lamps, the initial estimate of $84,000 may have seemed a bit over the top, but by the time it was finished, that number was the farthest thing from the minds of the building owners as they smiled all the way to the bank. LED Lights Cut Crime in Baltimore Parking Lot

Johns Hopkins School of Medicine is located in historic downtown Baltimore, Maryland, and is one of the most prestigious learning institutions in the country, but it is also in the midst of a crime wave that disturbs citizens and authorities alike. Since July of this year, there have been several incidents involving attacks and robberies near campus on employees traveling to and from transportation and parking lots. Several of these crimes involved the theft of cell phones that were grabbed from unsuspecting citizens. Police and campus authorities are recommending that pedestrians in the area remain aware of their surroundings at all times and not advertise that they have a cell phone in their possession in an effort to deter the criminals. The single most important tip they have for individuals is to stay in well-lit areas after dark. It is well known that adequate lighting is a major crime deterrent, so avoid dark places and isolated, shadowy areas.

Lighting To Overtake Cellphones As Largest LED Driver IC Sector

With the efficiency and total lumen output for light emitting diodes (LED) on the rise, lighting this year will surpass cellphones as the biggest application for LED driver ICs (integrated circuit), with revenue rising by more than 50 percent annually, and then more than doubling by 2018.

The market for LED driver ICs in LED lighting is set to grow to $323 million this year, upLighting to overtake from $214 million in 2012, according to a new report from IMS Research, now part of IHS Inc.
