CGE Energy (CGE) has upgraded the lighting at four southeast Michigan dealership locations. As a result of the change, Golling will see a return on its investment in less than 14 months and save $1.4 million in total energy costs over the next 10 years. Continue reading
Michigan State University has announced the results of a long-day lighting (LDL) research project at Wing Acres Dairy in Barry County, MI. Researchers from the school’s Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Department worked with the Michigan Milk Producers Association (MMPA) to study the implications of LED-based LDL on milk production, and the study indicates an 8% increase over the course of a year.
The LED retrofit market is at the beginning of a huge upward swing, according to an article in Forbes. IHS Technology reports that of the 140 million streetlights installed worldwide, just over 13 percent are LEDs, and that percentage is expected to jump to almost 65 percent by 2020.
Although LEDs cost three to four times more than traditional streetlamps, they last three to four times longer and produce two to three times more light per watt. They also deliver 30 percent to 70 percent in annual electricity savings over their predecessors, are more programmable and are easier to connect to citywide wireless networks. Continue reading
The Shops at Grand Avenue’s parking garage in Milwaukee, Wis., got an LED lighting upgrade, replacing 986 metal halide 150W lights with VPL LED parking vaportight fixtures manufactured by Precision-Paragon (P2), consuming 51 watts each.
The LED retrofit reduced the facility’s lighting energy consumption by over 66 percent. Continue reading
The Metropolitan Airports Commission operates seven airports in the Minnesota Twin Cities area of Minneapolis-St. Paul, and has begun a massive energy-efficiency project including LED lighting at the flagship Minneapolis St. Paul International Airport (MSP). Construction was begun this past week on what the agency said is Minnesota’s largest solar generation project — a 3-MW (megawatt) plant located atop two parking structures. Moreover, the project will include retrofit of more than 7700 metal-halide fixtures to solid-state lighting (SSL) products.
For many buildings, switching to more efficient lighting is one of the “low hanging fruit” for improving energy efficiency. Facility managers are increasingly turning to LED lighting technology to meet their energy efficiency goals.
LED bulbs top the lighting charts in energy efficiency and longevity, and frequently represent a payback of three years or less. However, LEDs may not be the best choice for every application. When considering whether to implement LEDs in your facility, you’ll need to take many factors into account. Continue reading
The Business Academy Bexley, a public school in London, has been upgraded with 8point3 LED lighting and Lutron adaptive wireless controls. The school reduced its lighting energy costs by 60%, which resulted in an annual savings of EUR 25,000 ($34,860). A seven-year financing scheme allowed zero upfront cost for the project.
The US Department of Energy (DOE) will enable LED street light upgrades in five metropolitan areas under the new High-Performance Outdoor Lighting Accelerator program announced by President Obama. In outdoor products, Cree has combined a customized LED and unique optics in an area-lighting fixture while MaxLite has announced new solid-state lighting (SSL) retrofit kits for post-top fixtures. Moving to projects, Cambridge, MA and Honolulu, HI have announced major street-light upgrade plans with the former having already begun deployment. Continue reading
DENVER – Denver International Airport (DIA) is retrofitting more than 5,400 lights located in the airport’s east and west parking garages with energy-efficient LED fixtures.
The majority of the lights are being replaced with 51-watt LEDs. Combined with other lighting systems in the project, DIA expects a net energy savings of about 45 percent, resulting in energy cost savings of about $327,000 per year. Continue reading
