Children’s Hospitals, spread across the US and located in Canada and Australia, do a fantastic job of helping even very sick children believe that better health is on the way. Still, entering any hospital is a daunting experience for children, leading the University of Oklahoma Children’s Hospital to commission a kid-friendly, LED-lit artwork project at the hospital entrance. The aptly named “Spirit” sculpture, by artist Matthew Placzek, is intended to raise the spirit of children entering the hospital and makes unique use of solid-state lighting (SSL).
The 140-ft-long Spirit sculpture includes twelve kites formed with stainless-steel frames and brightly-colored acrylic panels that complete the kite structure. LEDs light the kites at night, adding dynamic displays of color and a sense of movement and excitement. Philips Lighting has announced an LED architectural lighting project installed on the historic Big Four Bridge that links Louisville, KY and Jeffersonville, IN across the Ohio River. The dynamic, color-changing solid-state lighting (SSL) is intended to help revitalize the Louisville waterfront and make the pedestrian and bicyclist bridge a destination point in the region.
Michigan State University has announced the results of a long-day lighting (LDL) research project at Wing Acres Dairy in Barry County, MI. Researchers from the school’s Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Department worked with the Michigan Milk Producers Association (MMPA) to study the implications of LED-based LDL on milk production, and the study indicates an 8% increase over the course of a year.
Ephesus Lighting has announced that the University of Phoenix Stadium located in Glendale, AZ has installed the company’s LED-based stadium lights. The Arizona Cardinals have become the first home NFL (National Football League) team to play on a surface lit by solid-state lighting (SSL), and the NFL Super Bowl will be played under the LED lighting on Feb. 1, 2015.
The Metropolitan Airports Commission operates seven airports in the Minnesota Twin Cities area of Minneapolis-St. Paul, and has begun a massive energy-efficiency project including LED lighting at the flagship Minneapolis St. Paul International Airport (MSP). Construction was begun this past week on what the agency said is Minnesota’s largest solar generation project — a 3-MW (megawatt) plant located atop two parking structures. Moreover, the project will include retrofit of more than 7700 metal-halide fixtures to solid-state lighting (SSL) products.
The ThedaCare Health System located in Wisconsin has been a leader in sustainability initiatives and late last year also recognized that outdoor area lighting at a number of its facilities were in need of an upgrade — both due to excessive maintenance requirements and uneven light quality. The organization has performed a thorough evaluation of LED lighting and upgraded two of its facilities to solid-state lighting (SSL). The healthcare provider projects $40,000 annually in electrical and maintenance savings based on its first outdoor SSL projects.
GE Lighting has announced an LED retrofit project at the Boston University (BU) Track and Tennis Center on the Boston, MA campus. GE’s Albeo brand supplied ABHX Series solid-state lighting (SSL) products along with integrated control capability to deliver energy and maintenance savings and a more pleasing environment for athletes and spectators.
The US Department of Energy (DOE) will enable LED street light upgrades in five metropolitan areas under the new High-Performance Outdoor Lighting Accelerator program announced by President Obama. In outdoor products, Cree has combined a customized LED and unique optics in an area-lighting fixture while MaxLite has announced new solid-state lighting (SSL) retrofit kits for post-top fixtures. GE Lighting has announced that the city of Oakland, California is in the process of retrofitting 30,000 street lights with GE Evolve LED Roadway Scalable Cobrahead fixtures. The city is converting high-pressure sodium (HPS) lights that range from 70–400W along the breadth of the city’s roadways with the GE product family that offers models that can deliver a variety of lumen packages, as the scalable name implies.

LED-based lighting will enable higher illuminance levels on iconic artwork in famed Rome cathedral while preserving the historically-significant work and utilizing 60% less energy.
Osram’s lighting business has announced that it will be retrofitting the lighting in the Rome, Italy Sistine Chapel, using LED-based fixtures to highlight the Michelangelo frescoes. The project, involving custom-designed fixtures optimized for beam control and with a color spectrum that will highlight the pigmentation in the frescoes, will be completed next year, although a pilot project entitled LED4Art has already proven the concept.
