Power management company Eaton announced that its Neo-Ray Index light-emitting diode (LED) luminaires are helping to improve the lighting performance while lowering energy usage in the Gumberg Library at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. Recently completed on its first floor, this LED lighting upgrade will help the university reduce its annual energy consumption for the floor significantly.
The Metropolitan Airports Commission operates seven airports in the Minnesota Twin Cities area of Minneapolis-St. Paul, and has begun a massive energy-efficiency project including LED lighting at the flagship Minneapolis St. Paul International Airport (MSP). Construction was begun this past week on what the agency said is Minnesota’s largest solar generation project — a 3-MW (megawatt) plant located atop two parking structures. Moreover, the project will include retrofit of more than 7700 metal-halide fixtures to solid-state lighting (SSL) products.
The ThedaCare Health System located in Wisconsin has been a leader in sustainability initiatives and late last year also recognized that outdoor area lighting at a number of its facilities were in need of an upgrade — both due to excessive maintenance requirements and uneven light quality. The organization has performed a thorough evaluation of LED lighting and upgraded two of its facilities to solid-state lighting (SSL). The healthcare provider projects $40,000 annually in electrical and maintenance savings based on its first outdoor SSL projects.
GE Lighting has announced an LED retrofit project at the Boston University (BU) Track and Tennis Center on the Boston, MA campus. GE’s Albeo brand supplied ABHX Series solid-state lighting (SSL) products along with integrated control capability to deliver energy and maintenance savings and a more pleasing environment for athletes and spectators.
The Business Academy Bexley, a public school in London, has been upgraded with 8point3 LED lighting and Lutron adaptive wireless controls. The school reduced its lighting energy costs by 60%, which resulted in an annual savings of EUR 25,000 ($34,860). A seven-year financing scheme allowed zero upfront cost for the project.

The amber glow of the New York City streetlight is going away. In an energy-saving effort, the city plans to replace all of its 250,000 streetlights with brighter, whiter, energy-saving, light-emitting diode fixtures in one of the nation’s largest retrofitting projects, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and the transportation commissioner, Janette Sadik-Khan, said in a news conference on Thursday.
The phasing out is part of the administration’s long-term plan to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent by 2017. Mayor Bloomberg described the switch as a “large and necessary feat” that will save taxpayers money and move the city closer to its sustainability goals. Dubai Municipality, one of the main administrative departments of the Emirate of Dubai government, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Philips to convert all of the municipality’s lighting to LED. The agreement embraces all 262 of the municipality’s buildings, including city government offices, schools, public buildings such as courts and sports venues, and transportation buildings. The transformation from conventional lighting to LED is expected to save the Municipality up to 50 percent, roughly 10.5 GWh per year, on its energy consumption. It will also mean a reduction of some 6,200 tons of CO2 emissions per year.
