A Texas company that specializes in single-brew gourmet coffee machines and vending machines for offices has joined the ranks of companies all over the world that are seeing the benefits of switching to LED lighting. FreshBrew, of Houston, Texas, announced that it has replaced all the lighting in its 90,000-square-foot warehouse, manufacturing facility and offices, as well as all other interior and exterior lighting.
Most people have accepted that it’s all but over for old incandescent bulbs. But CFLs—compact fluorescent bulbs, the titular replacements for incandescents—may be rapidly becoming extinct as well.
The other day I found myself at a loss in the light bulb aisle of my hardware store. I might as well have been shopping for a carburetor. There were too many options with too many symbols and verbiage that I couldn’t decipher (LED, CFL, halogen, lumens, Kelvin, CRI), not to mention all of the various brands (GE, Philips, Cree, EcoSmart — each with its own packaging lingo). Since when do you need an electrical engineering degree to buy a light bulb?
For facility managers who have taken basic steps to reduce lighting system energy costs, the ability to wring savings out of lighting systems doesn’t end there.
Advances in technology continue to provide additional opportunities for savings. In fact, the average commercial facility could stand to do more than just basic upgrades to its outmoded lighting systems. Options run the gamut — including fixture replacement, daylighting, dimming, advanced control and ballast strategies.
“[A facility manager’s] best bet is to explore the different energy management strategies that are available,” says John J. Brelus, General Electric‘s global product general manager — fluorescent systems. Continue reading
Johns Hopkins School of Medicine is located in historic downtown Baltimore, Maryland, and is one of the most prestigious learning institutions in the country, but it is also in the midst of a crime wave that disturbs citizens and authorities alike. Since July of this year, there have been several incidents involving attacks and robberies near campus on employees traveling to and from transportation and parking lots. Several of these crimes involved the theft of cell phones that were grabbed from unsuspecting citizens. Police and campus authorities are recommending that pedestrians in the area remain aware of their surroundings at all times and not advertise that they have a cell phone in their possession in an effort to deter the criminals. The single most important tip they have for individuals is to stay in well-lit areas after dark. It is well known that adequate lighting is a major crime deterrent, so avoid dark places and isolated, shadowy areas.

In the debate over the merits of incandescent light bulbs versus compact fluorescent lamps, LED bulbs have become a viable alternative. Switch Lighting is hoping to ride the wave of rising consumer interest with its own series of LED bulbs.
Switch assembled a team of engineers and physicists in its Silicon Valley headquarters in 2007, and produced a bulb last year with distinct design that has won several innovation awards.
The bulb incorporates technology that Switch calls a LQD cooling system, a patented design that bathes the LED with a coolant made of liquid silicone. The liquid diffuses the light over the surface of the bulb, producing light that is omnidirectional and illuminating a room similar to the way an incandescent does. The shape is similar, too, for those who prefer traditional A-series light bulbs. Continue reading
